Actors’ and Directors’ Workshop

Geraldine Maguire will be directing ‘By the Bog of Cats’ by Marina Carr to be performed in The Teacher’s club from Monday 12th June 2017 to Saturday 17th June.

In anticipation Two Workshops will be held in The Teacher’s Club as follows:
10am to 3pm, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th February 2017
and 10am to 3pm, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February 2017

Geraldine Maguire – Workshop facilitator

Geraldine has an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from TCD and a Masters. She has directed varied works from The Importance of Being Earnest to Death of a Salesman. She recently produced seven Beckett plays, directing three of them. She has performed many roles, from Desdemona in Othello, to Blanche in Street Car Named Desire, to Mrs Gogan in The Plough and the Stars. Recently she performed at the RDS in The Masque of Minerva, a musical revue to celebrate Shakespeare’s 500 year anniversary, also the lead in Patrick Pearse’s The King for Sparc Productions.

Caroline Coffey – Workshop facilitator

Caroline is a drama facilitator and director with a Masters in International Theatre studies from DCU and a graduate of Artstrain programme with The National Association of Youth Drama. Caroline Coffey at DSS workshopShe is a theatre performance graduate of Inchicore College with various screen credits. She has trained in Theatre of the Oppressed with Julian Boal. She tutors in the Gaiety School of Acting. She works freelance with community theatre projects and most recently with the Abbey Theatre community and outreach programme.

Workshop Schedule

We recommend that participants will read the play before the workshop

  1. Start with limbering up exercises.
  2. A brief outline of the work which will include: Themes of the play and the plot.
  3. The mood and atmosphere of the play will be discussed.
  4. The societal power structures within the play will be explored.
  5. 5 key scenes will be improvised and we will discuss their effectiveness.
  6. Each scene will then be performed, keeping in mind the aspects discussed.
