SUMMARY:A Special Tribute to Patrick Kavanagh
DESCRIPTION:All Shakes Members and Friends\, \nWhat Joyce did for Dublin\, Patrick Kavanagh’s poetry did for the strong grey soil of Monaghan\, revealing the unsentimental truth of rural Irish Life and the mystic claims land makes upon the heart. \n \nA special  evening of to commemorate the work of that great poet Patrick Kavanagh will take place in the Teachers’ Club\, Room 4\, on the night of  Saturday\, \n17th November\, at 7.30 p.m \nPatrick Kavanagh died on 30th November 1967\, so\, while we were not able to run the event then\, happily we have a date close to \n30th November this year. \nThe evening will follow a similar format to the last two very enjoyable poetry evenings\, and will again be co-ordinated by Mary Dowling and Mary Howard. \nSo\, select your favourite piece from Kavanagh’s oeuvre – poetry\, prose or song –  to present on the night along with a short résumé telling us why you have chosen it in not more than one minute!  While the emphasis of the evening is on Kavanagh’s own words\, some may instead wish to contribute a piece about the poet. \nAll presentations should run for no longer than five minutes. \nTo avoid duplication submit titles of your first and second choices  as soon as possible please\,  and certainly before 21st October – it will be a first come\, first choice system!  And please submit to both marytdowling@gmail.com and mhmaryshoward@gmail.com    \nIt would be helpful if you could also include your telephone number. \nWe are looking forward to a big turnout for an entertaining evening with tea\, refreshments\, and great Kavanagh lore!    \n We ask for a contribution of €5 per person to cover the costs of the evening. \nEverybody is welcome of course whether you wish to present\, or just enjoy listening.

SUMMARY:Club Malfi
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever walked into a bar and seen these signs that say\, \n“You don’t have to be mad to work here but it helps” \nand then you’re greeted by the dullest\, mind-numbingly boring bar staff? Here in Club Malfi madness is an essential requirement. \nBook Now\n \n“Whether we fall by ambition\, blood or lust\, \nLike diamonds we are cut with our own dust” \nDirected by Valerie Greene and written collaboratively by several society members. \nInspired by John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi (1614) this production re-imagines Webster’s macabre revenge tragedy\, placing the action in a rundown\, late-night\, cabaret club where the owner\, the Duchess is planning her escape from her corrupt brothers Cardinal and Ferdinand. The audience will follow the various characters’ stories of love\, deception and murder over the course of one night. \nThe action is spread over two floors and six rooms including an intimate black-box theatre space. The audience will be led by club bouncers to various locations but are welcome to explore the scenes in the Club as they so desire.* \nBooking for this event is now open. Booking @ www.tickets.ie or 085 8432881 \n*Please note this is promenade theatre and will involve climbing stairs. Not suitable for patrons under 16 years of age. No backpacks please. \n

SUMMARY:Table Quiz
DESCRIPTION:The story goes that a Dublin theatre proprietor by the name of Richard Daly made a bet that he could\, within forty-eight hours\, make a nonsense word known throughout the city\, and that the public would supply a meaning for it. \nAfter a performance one evening\, he gave his staff cards with the word ‘quiz’ written on them\, and told them to write the word on walls around the city. \nThe next day the strange word was the talk of the town\, and within a short time it had become part of the English language. \nFollowing in the theatre tradition we are holding a Table Quiz \n \nFriday 14th September\n@ 7.30pm\nTEACHERS CLUB \n€10 per head \n\n4 per table

SUMMARY:The Weaver's Grave
DESCRIPTION:The first of the rehearsed readings for the 2018-2019 season is \nThe Weaver’s Grave\nby \nSeumas O’Kelly \nadapted by \nMicheal O hAodha \ndirected by \nBreege Fahy \nThe cast \nMEEHAUL LYNSKY\, an old Nailer\, played by Philip Gleeson.\nCAHIR BOWES\, an old stonebreaker\, played by Dáithí O Broin.\nTHE WIDOW\, played by Mary Conlon.\n1st GRAVEDIGGER\, played by Martin O’Connor.\n2nd GRAVEDIGGER\, played by Andrew Dancey.\nMALACHI ROOHAN\, a very old Cooper\, played by Michael Sharp.\nNAN ROOHAN\, his daughter\, played by Emma Hurley. \n \nMortimer Hehir\, the weaver\, had died and they had come in search\, of his grave to Cloon na Morav\, the Meadow of the Dead.\nMeehaul Lynskey \, the nail-maker\, was first across the stile. There was excitement in his face. His long warped body moved in a shuffle over the ground.\nFollowing him came Cahir Bowes\, the stone-breaker\, who was so beaten down from the hips forward\, that his back was horizontal as the back of an animal. His right hand held a stick which propped him up in front\, his left hand clutched his coat behind\, just above the small of the back. By these devices kept himself from toppling head over heels as he walked. Mother earth was the brow of Cahir Bowes by magnetic force\, and Cahir Bowes was resisting her fatal kiss to the last. And just now there was animation in the face he raised from its customary contemplation of the ground.\nBoth old men had the air of those who had been unexpectedly let loose. For a long time they had lurked somewhere in the shadows of life\, the world having no business for them\, and now\, suddenly\, they had been remembered and called forth to perform an office which nobody else on earth could perform. The excitement in their faces as they crossed over the stile into Cloon na Morav expressed a vehemence in their belated usefulness.\nHot on their heels came two dark\, handsome\, stoutly built men\, alike even to the cord that tied their corduroy trousers under their knees\, and\, being grave-diggers\, they carried flashing spades.\nLast of all\, and after a little delay\, a firm white hand was\, laid on the stile\, a dark figure followed\, the figure of a woman\, whose palely sad face was picturesquely\, almost dramatically\, framed in a black shawl which hung from the crown of the head. She was the widow of Mortimer Hehir\, the weaver\, and she followed the others into \nCloon na Morav\, the Meadow of the Dead. \n  \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:The Capulets and Montagues
DESCRIPTION:Book now on tickets.ie\nPaul Maher will be directing his own translation of ‘The Capulet’s and Montague’s or Romeo and Juliet: The Comedy’.\nThe play will be staged in the Hall of Teachers’ Club\, Parnell Square from 18 to 21 April this year in a cabaret style production with live music and dance. \nThis production is particularly exciting because \n•   Lope de Vega (1564-1635) is Spain’s foremost playwright and a contemporary of Shakespeare.  Though virtually unknown in the English speaking world he is hugely respected among Spanish speakers and is credited with writing over 1\,500 plays in his lifetime\, many of them classics of world theatre.  Some people may remember the evening in 2015 when Paul introduced Lope’s work to the society \n•   The play was written around 1603 by Spain’s foremost playwright Lope de Vega\, a contemporary of Shakespeare. While both playwrights\, writing at the same time used the same sources for their plays\, there is no evidence that either was aware of the other’s work. \n•   There are many similarities in the plots and\, of course\, significant differences\, not least of which is the fact Lope created a comedy from the material while Shakespeare created a tragedy. \n•   There is a broad correlation between scenes in both plays: a party scene in which the lovers fall in love at first sight\, a fight scene and killing after which the male protagonist is sent into exile\, a farewell scene in the garden between the lovers\, a sleeping draught that induces a death-like state in the female protagonist\, and a scene in a crypt. \n•   This is an English version produced especially for the Shakes. \n•   This may be the first production in Ireland of a play by Lope de Vega.  It is certainly the first in living memory \n•   By attending the show get the opportunity to evaluate how two masters of world theatre shaped brilliant but very different plays from the same source material. \nCheck out the interview with the Director – Paul Maher – HERE

SUMMARY:Table Quiz
DESCRIPTION:The story goes that a Dublin theatre proprietor by the name of Richard Daly made a bet that he could\, within forty-eight hours\, make a nonsense word known throughout the city\, and that the public would supply a meaning for it. After a performance one evening\, he gave his staff cards with the word ‘quiz’ written on them\, and told them to write the word on walls around the city. The next day the strange word was the talk of the town\, and within a short time it had become part of the language. \nFollowing in the theatre tradition we are holding a Table Quiz \n \nFriday 9th March\n@ 7.30pm\nTEACHERS CLUB\n€10 per head \n\n4 per table.

SUMMARY:Castle Rackrent
DESCRIPTION:Jan 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of Maria Edgeworth’s birth. Born on Jan 1st\, 1768 in Oxfordshire\, Maria was the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth – a prominent Anglo-Irish landlord\, writer\, engineer\, educationalist and member of Grattan’s Parliament from 1798 to its dissolution in 1801. \nAfter attending boarding school in England\, Maria moved permanently to her father’s estate at Edgeworthstown Co. Longford\, where she assisted her father with estate affairs and pursued a writing career. \nHer published works include children’s stories\, studies on education (often written in conjunction with her father)\, and novels. Published in 1800\, Castle Rackrent is a witty satire on the effects of the feudal system in Ireland and considered to be the first historical novel. \nPronounced by W.B. Yeats to be “one of the most inspired chronicles written in English”\, Castle Rackent offers a wry glimpse into the demise of the corrupt Rackrent dynasty\, told by the ‘loyal’ family servant Thady Quirk. \n \nA Rehearsed Reading of \nCastle Rackrent\nby \nMaria Edgeworth \nIn a version adapted and directed by Róisín Mee \nThe rehearsed reading features a cast you won’t want to miss! \nPhilip Gleeson\, \nIan Blackmore\, \nTim Casey\, \nSonia Lavelle\, \nNessa Power\, \nMartin O’Connor\, \nNoelle Timmons\, \nEoin Ó’Seaghdha \nand Colin Carpenter. \nGerardine Meaney\, Professor of Cultural Theory\, UCD\, will  join a panel discussion afterwards. \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:By the Bog of Cats
DESCRIPTION:Under licence from The Agency London\, Dublin Shakespeare Society proudly present this amateur production of \nBy the Bog of Cats\nMarina Carr \nDirected by Geraldine Maguire \n\nBook Now\nDownload A4 Poster \nCast\n\nMary Conlon\nBrian Murray\nCiara Cochrane\n\n\nMartin O Connor\nNiamh Delany\nPeter Prior\n\n\n Timothy Telford\nLouis O Byrne\nWillie Morrisson\n\n\nEimear SimmsKit GerathyBreege Fahy\n\n\nJulianna Gonzales\n  Noelle Timmons \n\nThe scorn of Hester Swayne\, a woman abandoned once and discarded later\, threatens a whole community as she awaits her mother’s return to the Bog of Cats: ‘God’s punishing me but I won’t take his blows lyin’ down’. Forgiveness\, vengeance and disparate forces figure in the tangled history embodied in her own powerful drama as it makes its way through heartbreak and\, occasionally\, hilarity\, and its secrets unfold towards its tragic conclusion. \nWednesday 14th June\,Special Guest : Dr Emilie Pine\, UCD \nEmilie Pine lectures in Modern Drama and Irish Studies. She joined the School of English\, Drama and Film in the spring of 2008. Prior to this she lectured for two years at the University of York\, following the completion of her PhD in Irish Theatre and Film at Trinity College\, Dublin. \nEmilie is Director of the Irish Memory Studies Research Network and Assistant Editor of the Irish University Review. She is currently a judge for the Irish Times Theatre Awards. \nEmilie will comment on the production which will then lead in to a discussion with contribution from the audience. \nDirector’s Synopsis\nMarina Carr’s plays are all inspired by the plays and legends of Ancient Greece. Carr states that By the bog of Cats was inspired by Medea by Euripides which was produced in the ampitheatre at Epidaurus in 431 B.C.  The play remained part of the repertoire of Ancient Greek Theatre and experienced renewed interest with the emergence of the feminist movement because of its nuanced and sympathetic portrayal of Medea’s struggle to take charge of her own life in a male-dominated world. \nHester Swane represents both Medea and the Traveller Community as she is the outsider shunned by the settled community because of her strange and foreign ways. She represents   The Other’\, the untouchable\, the people that society reject and therefore is ostricised by the community. With so many immigrants today in Ireland we are faced with the challenge of embracing different cultures. \nIreland today and the rest of the world has embrace capitalism\, industrialisation and materialism. Carr poses the question what space is there left in our lives for the wild\, the untamed\, for dreams\, ghosts\, poetry and song? She presents characters full of wit\, comedy\, tragedy and pathos. She explores the warped relationships in familiies and communities. The play is a microcosm of society’s struggles and the whole gambit of the human condition. \nNature itself is shown as monumental\, represented by the Bog\, which holds the secrets\, of the past and is ever changing\, mysterious and treacherous. Modern society is confronted by the ghosts of the past and the memories\, dreams and poetry of the human soul and spirit. We recognise Carr’s characters in ourselves. They are full of warmth\, dynamism\, courage with hearts struggling to survive the human condition. Carr shows us the unpredictabilty the transitory\, and vulnerable nature of existence. \nGeraldine Maguire

SUMMARY:Staging McGahern 2017
DESCRIPTION:We are proud to present\, under licence with ‘The Agency (London) Ltd.\, a production which dramatises two of McGahern’s short stories. \nThe experience of loss and yearning forms the core of both of these plays staged in the Theatre@36 in the Teachers Club\, Dublin. \n‘A Slip Up’ concerns a couple who have given up their farm in rural Ireland in middle-age to emigrate to London. \nThe effects of this sundering from the land and community are revealed through the ordinary routines of married life. \n‘All Sorts of Impossible Things’ centres on a friendship between an unmarried\, middle-aged school teacher and a young\, married\, chronically-ill agricultural instructor. \nThe disparity in age\, health\, and marital status are the means through which McGahern explores issues of love\, loss\, fear of death\, and the nature of friendship itself. \nCasts are as follows: \nA Slip Up \nPaul Maher \nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan \nBrendan Dunne \nMary Conlon \nMarie Ryan \n~ \nAll Sorts of Impossible Things \nPádraig Denihan \nHilary Boyle \nPaul McCorry \nEoin Ó Séaghdha \nAnn Hogan \nAnn Kennedy \nJane Baird \n \nThis production has been licensed by arrangement with \nThe Agency (London) Ltd.\, 24 Pottery Lane\, London W11 4LZ \n

SUMMARY:The Garden Party
DESCRIPTION:The Sheridan family is preparing to host a garden party. \nLaura is supposed to be in charge but has trouble with the workers who appear to know better\, and her mother (Mrs. Sheridan) has ordered lilies to be delivered for the party without Laura’s approval. Her sister Jose tests the piano\, and then sings a song in case she is asked to do so again later. \nAfter the furniture is rearranged\, they learn that their working-class neighbor Mr. Scott has died. \nWhile Laura believes the party should be called off\, neither Jose nor their mother agrees. The party is a success\, and later Mrs. Sheridan decides it would be good to bring a basket full of leftovers to the Scotts’ house. She summons Laura to do so. \nLaura is shown into the poor neighbors’ house by Mrs. Scott’s sister\, then sees the widow and her late husband’s corpse. She is enamored of the young man\, finding him beautiful and compelling\, and when she leaves to find her brother waiting. By visiting this dead man\, she will find her true self and become more than just a social class. \n Rehearsed Reading of “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield \nAdapted andDirected by Emily Maher.
