SUMMARY:Rehearsed Reading~Mothers Day and Significant Loss
DESCRIPTION:Rehearsed Reading Season\n2019/20\nAuditions\nfor\nMothers Day\nand\nSignificant Loss \n\n \nWritten by: Sarah Fahy\nDirector: Breege Fahy \nMother’s Day\nA mother with Alzheimer’s. A documentary of her life. A family bond. Three lives unwind. \nMother’s Day is a short play written by Sarah Fahy. It won Best Script at The Clairemorris Fringe Festival 2019\, where it was staged for the first time. It is set in Ireland in 1999/2000. The play explores the lives of three women\, Peggy a woman with early onset Alzheimer’s and her two daughters Marian and Karen. The play unfolds over the course of a few months where Karen sets out to make a documentary on her mother’s life and illness before her memory is lost. We see both the sadness and hilarity of the changes in Peggy as her Alzheimer’s takes hold and in turn how her daughters deal with the situation in very different ways. Their lives unravel before them as they navigate their mother’s memory\, all the while being documented on video. ‘Some things are better left unsaid’. \nCast \nGeraldine FitzGerald\, \nMary Conlon \nand \nCaomhe O’Leary. \n  \nSignificant Loss\nA slice of life. SUMMARY:Nannie's Night Out
DESCRIPTION:NANNIE’S NIGHT OUT\nA comedy in one act. \nby Sean O’Casey \n \nIt is just 2 years after the establishment of the Free State. Nannie\, out of jail\, intends to have a good night on the streets of her impoverished\, north inner city Dublin. Meanwhile various people are surreptitiously seeking a free place to live. Others are hoping to cadge some money or even chance a bit of thieving/shop lifting. But\, as always with O’Casey\, there is more to it all than meets the eye. \nThis play was presented at the Abbey in 1924. It bears much relationship to The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock\, both of which went before it. In addition it has elements of The Plough and the Stars\, which was presented in 1926. It has been described by Prof Robert Hogan as an “unrecognised masterpiece”. Amongst the last of his writings\, as O’Casey was coming into conflict with the Abbey\, it also has some marks of his later Expressionist works. \nCast\nPolly:                                            Geraldine Maguire\nNannie:                                                   Nessa Power\nYoung girl:                                   Bernie Reynolds\nThe Ballad singer:                         Eoin Ó Séaghdha\nFemale Ballad singer (offstage)            Mary Ryan\nJohnny:                                                Dáithí O Broin\nJimmy:                                                 George Carroll\nJoe:                                                            Jim O’Keefe\n2 Ambulance Men:                           Willie Morrison\,\nRobert                                              Bernie Reynolds\nYoung Man                                 Maxim Trigub\nCrowd \nWith permission from: Macnaughton Lord Representation \nPart Two:\nNANNIE & O’CASEY’S EARLY WRITINGS \nREADERS:\nMary Dowling                          Geraldine Fitzgerald\nMaire Moriarty                          Roisin Mee\nBernadette Ryan Harvey \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

DESCRIPTION:This is a rehearsed reading of an original film script written by Brian Murray andset during the Norman invasion of Ireland. \nAuditions between 6pm and 9pm in Teachers Club on Wednesday 16th October. \nPerformance on Saturday 23rd November. \nThere’ll be maximum 4 rehearsals. \nIf you’re interested but can’t make the audition\, just email Brian amd he’ll work something out. \n brian_murray35(at)hotmail.com \n \nDe Clare\, Richard\, Earl of Pembroke and Strigul\, surnamed Strongbow\, was born about 1130. He succeeded his father in his title and estates in 1149.\nThe extensive ruins of his castle at Chepstowe would alone attest his possessions and influence; but having wasted his substance by extravagance\, and being out of favour with\, he eagerly seized the first opportunity that offered of retrieving his broken fortunes.\nThis came in King Henry’s licence to Dermot MacMurrough\, permitting him to seek assistance in England to establish his claim to the throne of Leinster.\nMacMurrough offered Strongbow extensive territories in Ireland\, and the hand of his daughter Eva\, if he would enter into his plans.\nThe intrepid Earl threw himself heart and soul into the enterprise\, and in May 1169 sent forward an expedition…… \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:Glenmalure Hill Walk and Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Shakespeare Society is holding a fundraising hill-walk followed by a rehearsed reading of JM Synge’s ‘In the Shadow of the Glen’ in Glenmalure on Sunday 18th of August (weather permitting). \n \nThe walk\, to be led by Louis O’Byrne\, will start at 12.00 noon and last approximately one hour.  It will include part of the historical Miner’s Path and involve some uphill walking along forest paths suitable for most walkers.  The starting point will be the Barravore car park close to Glenmalure Youth Hostel\, and will terminate at the hostel itself. \nThe reading which should last approximately 45 minutes\, will be performed in the garden of the  hostel after the walk. The starting time will be 2.30pm (for those who do not wish to walk). \n‘In the Shadow of the Glen’ is a particularly suitable choice\, as a ruined cottage close to the hostel is believed to be the cottage Synge had in mind as the setting for the play.  The reading will be performed by Roisin Mee\, Philip Gleeson\, Paul McCorry and Stephen Burke and directed by Paul Maher. \nCooking facilities at the hostel are limited but tea and coffee will be available and the venue is suitable for picnics.  You would be advised to bring ground blankets or foldable chairs. Sanitary facilities are also limited. \nIt takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach Glenmalure Hostel (A67YW77) from Dublin by car and\, as there is no public transport\, we would suggest that those travelling might offer lifts to members who don’t have transport of their own. \nBooking at 0858432881\, contribution €15 per person. \n  \nHistoric Glenmalure \nAt the famous Battle of Glenmalure 1580 an Irish Catholic force made up of Gaelic clans from the Wicklow Mountains and led by Fiach McHugh O’Byrne\, defeated an English army under Lord Grey. The fighting took place near the O’Byrne mountain stronghold in Glenmalure. \nWhile trying to climb the steep slopes of the valley (visible from the path)\, the inexperienced English soldiers were ambushed by the Irish rebels\, who had hidden themselves in the woods. The English army of 3\,000 suffered 800 casualties. Rumours that Louis O’Byrne was leading a walk in the valley at the time can be discounted\, as he was clearly too young. \nMining in Glenmalure may have begun as early as 1797.  It continued through the period of the 1798 rebellion which persisted in the valley until 1803. Various records document intermittent production between 1811 and 1900.  On the walk you will see spoil heaps from the mines\, a tunnel or adit\, the remains of a crusher house and water mill. \nJohn Millington Synge \nSynge was widely regarded as the most influential Irish dramatist of the twentieth century. He was an Irish playwright\, poet\, prose writer\, and collector of folklore. One of the co -founders of the Abbey Theatre\, he is best known for the play “The Playboy of the Western World” which caused riots during its opening run at the Abbey theatre. Synge wrote many well known plays\, including “Riders to the Sea”\, which is often considered to be his strongest literary work. Although he came from an Anglo-Irish background\, his writings are mainly concerned with the world of the Roman Catholic peasants of rural Ireland. “In The Shadow of the Glen” premiered on October 8\, 1903 as a production of the Irish National Theatre Society. Although it was the third play completed by Synge\, it was the first to be produced\, and it created an immediate controversy for the author and the National Theatre. Although the play’s focus on a loveless and decaying marriage hardly represented a new subject for drama\, many Irish nationalists saw Synge’s play as nothing less than an affront to Irish femininity. The resulting confrontations established the author’s volatile relationship with the nationalist community in Ireland and set the stage for the more massive and far-reaching conflict.

There was excitement in his face. His long warped body moved in a shuffle over the ground.\nFollowing him came Cahir Bowes\, the stone-breaker\, who was so beaten down from the hips forward\, that his back was horizontal as the back of an animal. His right hand held a stick which propped him up in front\, his left hand clutched his coat behind\, just above the small of the back. By these devices kept himself from toppling head over heels as he walked. Mother earth was the brow of Cahir Bowes by magnetic force\, and Cahir Bowes was resisting her fatal kiss to the last. And just now there was animation in the face he raised from its customary contemplation of the ground.\nBoth old men had the air of those who had been unexpectedly let loose. For a long time they had lurked somewhere in the shadows of life\, the world having no business for them\, and now\, suddenly\, they had been remembered and called forth to perform an office which nobody else on earth could perform. The excitement in their faces as they crossed over the stile into Cloon na Morav expressed a vehemence in their belated usefulness.\nHot on their heels came two dark\, handsome\, stoutly built men\, alike even to the cord that tied their corduroy trousers under their knees\, and\, being grave-diggers\, they carried flashing spades.\nLast of all\, and after a little delay\, a firm white hand was\, laid on the stile\, a dark figure followed\, the figure of a woman\, whose palely sad face was picturesquely\, almost dramatically\, framed in a black shawl which hung from the crown of the head. She was the widow of Mortimer Hehir\, the weaver\, and she followed the others into \nCloon na Morav\, the Meadow of the Dead. \n  \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:The Capulets and Montagues
DESCRIPTION:Book now on tickets.ie\nPaul Maher will be directing his own translation of ‘The Capulet’s and Montague’s or Romeo and Juliet: The Comedy’.\nThe play will be staged in the Hall of Teachers’ Club\, Parnell Square from 18 to 21 April this year in a cabaret style production with live music and dance. \nThis production is particularly exciting because \n•   Lope de Vega (1564-1635) is Spain’s foremost playwright and a contemporary of Shakespeare.  Though virtually unknown in the English speaking world he is hugely respected among Spanish speakers and is credited with writing over 1\,500 plays in his lifetime\, many of them classics of world theatre.  Some people may remember the evening in 2015 when Paul introduced Lope’s work to the society \n•   The play was written around 1603 by Spain’s foremost playwright Lope de Vega\, a contemporary of Shakespeare. While both playwrights\, writing at the same time used the same sources for their plays\, there is no evidence that either was aware of the other’s work. \n•   There are many similarities in the plots and\, of course\, significant differences\, not least of which is the fact Lope created a comedy from the material while Shakespeare created a tragedy. \n•   There is a broad correlation between scenes in both plays: a party scene in which the lovers fall in love at first sight\, a fight scene and killing after which the male protagonist is sent into exile\, a farewell scene in the garden between the lovers\, a sleeping draught that induces a death-like state in the female protagonist\, and a scene in a crypt. \n•   This is an English version produced especially for the Shakes. \n•   This may be the first production in Ireland of a play by Lope de Vega.  It is certainly the first in living memory \n•   By attending the show get the opportunity to evaluate how two masters of world theatre shaped brilliant but very different plays from the same source material. \nCheck out the interview with the Director – Paul Maher – HERE

SUMMARY:Table Quiz
DESCRIPTION:The story goes that a Dublin theatre proprietor by the name of Richard Daly made a bet that he could\, within forty-eight hours\, make a nonsense word known throughout the city\, and that the public would supply a meaning for it. After a performance one evening\, he gave his staff cards with the word ‘quiz’ written on them\, and told them to write the word on walls around the city. The next day the strange word was the talk of the town\, and within a short time it had become part of the language. \nFollowing in the theatre tradition we are holding a Table Quiz \n \nFriday 9th March\n@ 7.30pm\nTEACHERS CLUB\n€10 per head \n\n4 per table.

SUMMARY:Castle Rackrent
DESCRIPTION:Jan 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of Maria Edgeworth’s birth. Born on Jan 1st\, 1768 in Oxfordshire\, Maria was the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth – a prominent Anglo-Irish landlord\, writer\, engineer\, educationalist and member of Grattan’s Parliament from 1798 to its dissolution in 1801. \nAfter attending boarding school in England\, Maria moved permanently to her father’s estate at Edgeworthstown Co. Longford\, where she assisted her father with estate affairs and pursued a writing career. \nHer published works include children’s stories\, studies on education (often written in conjunction with her father)\, and novels. Published in 1800\, Castle Rackrent is a witty satire on the effects of the feudal system in Ireland and considered to be the first historical novel. \nPronounced by W.B. Yeats to be “one of the most inspired chronicles written in English”\, Castle Rackent offers a wry glimpse into the demise of the corrupt Rackrent dynasty\, told by the ‘loyal’ family servant Thady Quirk. \n \nA Rehearsed Reading of \nCastle Rackrent\nby \nMaria Edgeworth \nIn a version adapted and directed by Róisín Mee \nThe rehearsed reading features a cast you won’t want to miss! \nPhilip Gleeson\, \nIan Blackmore\, \nTim Casey\, \nSonia Lavelle\, \nNessa Power\, \nMartin O’Connor\, \nNoelle Timmons\, \nEoin Ó’Seaghdha \nand Colin Carpenter. \nGerardine Meaney\, Professor of Cultural Theory\, UCD\, will  join a panel discussion afterwards. \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.
