SUMMARY:A Secret Love
DESCRIPTION:A SECRET LOVE \nAdapted as a radio play by Val O’Donnell from the short story\nThe Trusting and The Maimed by James Plunkett. \nJames Plunkett’s short story\, The Trusting and the Maimed\, is regarded as one of the author’s most engaging and lyrical stories. \nIt centres on the plight of a young\, single\, unmarried girl who becomes pregnant in Ireland in the early 1950s. It focuses\, episodically and objectively\, on the various responses of friends\, family and others to Rita Kilshaw’s predicament\, and their conditioning by the social values and strong religious beliefs of the time. \nAlthough written seventy years ago\, James Plunkett’s powerful story has much contemporary relevance\, given the serious efforts made in recent times to acknowledge the failings of some of the most powerful institutions in the State\, and wider society\, in caring for single\, unmarried mothers. \nVal O’Donnell\nMarch 2024 \nCAST\nEoin Langford\nSarah Groarke\nUna Ni Chanainn\nEmma Hurley\nDeirdre Jones\nPaul McCorry\nPadraig Denihan\nBen Musgrave\nSteve Curran\nThomas Conlon\nDirected by Mary Conlon \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nThere will be a raffle!!

SUMMARY:The Comedy of Errors
DESCRIPTION:Matinee Saturday 20th @3pm\n“The Comedy of Errors” is a comedic play written by William Shakespeare in the early 1590s. It is one of Shakespeare’s earliest works and is often regarded as his most farcical comedy. The play is set in the bustling port city of Ephesus\, which is known for its trade and commerce. The story revolves around two sets of identical twins who were separated at birth and end up in Ephesus\, leading to a series of hilarious and confusing misunderstandings. \nThe main characters in the play are the two sets of identical twins: Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio of Syracuse\, and Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant Dromio of Ephesus. The two sets of twins were separated at birth during a shipwreck and each was raised in a different city. Years later\, Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant arrive in Ephesus in search of their long-lost twin brothers\, and their arrival sets off a chain of mistaken identity and comic misunderstandings. \nThe play’s plot revolves around the confusion that arises from the mistaken identities of the two sets of twins. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant are mistaken for their identical twins by the citizens of Ephesus\, leading to a series of absurd situations. They are pursued by creditors and wives\, and even end up in jail. Meanwhile\, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant are baffled by the strange behavior of everyone that they meet\, who seem to be acting as if they know them. \nThroughout the play\, Shakespeare uses clever wordplay\, puns\, and physical comedy to create a light-hearted and amusing atmosphere. The play is full of mistaken identities\, slapstick humor\, and improbable coincidences. Despite the farcical nature of the play\, it also explores deeper themes such as identity\, family\, and forgiveness. Overall\, “The Comedy of Errors” is a timeless classic that continues to be popular with audiences today.\n \n \nDirected by\nNoelle Timmons \nProduction\nAnne McManus \nStage Manager\nAisling O’Byrne \nCast\nNeil Sharpson\, Deaglán Page\, Shane Cadden\, Marcus MacGabhann\, Ellen Howley\, Geraldine Maguire\, Julie Mannion\, Bernie Reynolds\, Aidan Judd\, Brigid Sweeney\, Edward Clinton\, Nathan Keogh\, Hilary Boyle\, Francesca Bianchi\, Irene Cubas\, Dáithí O Broin\, Peter Prior\, Martin O’Connor \nTickets €18 Concession rate €16  \nBookings 085 223 0251 \nBook Now Online

SUMMARY:Rehearsed Reading ~ The War of the Worlds
DESCRIPTION:HG Wells wrote the novel\, Howard Koch wrote the radio play loosely based on the novel………………….. \nNow we have a wonderful new re-adaptation of the radio play Written and Directed by The Shakes very own Ray Murray. \nSet in Ireland\, a stellar cast brings you a rehearsed reading that will have you on the edge of your seat. \nThis is one not to be missed so get there early to grab a seat! \nCast \nLiam Borgström\, \nEdward Clinton\, \nSteve Curran\, \nPadraig Denihan\, \nPhilip Gleeson\, \nEmma Hurley\, \nNatasha Lynch\, \nPaul McCorry\, \nJames McMahon\, \nRoisin Mee\, \nBrigid Sweeney\, \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nThere will be a raffle!! \n Director’s Notes \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Ray Murray\, Director \n \n \n \n \n \n War of the worlds 2023\n\nIn October 2019 a few of us went to see a radio version of\nBram Stoker's Dracula in St Ann's church. The play was\noriginally written as part of Orson Welles serialization that\nincluded War of the Worlds.1Ne loved the way the production\nwas presented with a visual representation of how the radio\nplay would look like as performed in the studio. I was\nintrigued as to what could be achieved if you were to perform\nWar of the Worlds in the same format with over the top\nsound effects and some surreal post-apocalyptic music.\n\nHaving read both the novel and the radio play I decided to\nrewrite using Irish references. This gave scope to add some\ncolour to the intentionally colourless characters in the\noriginal works. I loosely based the reporters on Irish\ncelebrities (Gay Byrne\, Teresa Mannion and a youthful TV3\nstyle reporter). Other characters such as the farmer\, the\nBrigadier and the Irish President should also be recognisable\nto our audience.\n\nThe story is broadly the same with a few alterations to bring it\na little more up to date. Wells very clearly stated that the\ncreatures were Martians. In our adaptation there is no\ndefinitive explanation given as to where they come from.\nWells also asserted that the Martians invaded as a result of a\ndrain on resources in their own planet that resulted from the\nplanet drifting further from the sun. We speculate through\nProfessor McPherson that the aliens have come to our planet\nas a result of the creatures themselves exhausting resources\non their own planet\, adding an environmental dimension to\nthe piece.\n\nRay Murray\, Director

SUMMARY:Theatre of the Oppressed
DESCRIPTION:This Forum Theatre event comprised two short pieces devised over six weekly workshops with Shakes members.\nForum Theater\, one of the major techniques within Theatre of the Oppressed\, allows spectators to collaborate in the experience by becoming ‘spect-actors’ (the audiences who participate in the actual performance). \nThrough a moderator (Joker) and a group of actively engaged spectators\, Forum Theatre embodies dialogues\, exchanges\, learning\, teaching\, and pleasure. At the conclusion\, the play will begin again with the audience being able to replace or add to the characters on stage to present their interventions; alternate solutions to the problems faced. \nParticipation is option\, so if you come you don’t have to get up on stage – but you might want to! \n \nCast and Production \nBrian Murray\nEdward Clinton\nDermot Corrigan\nNoelle Timmons\nDaithi O Broin\nAidan Judd\nCristhian R. SUMMARY:Render Unto Caesar
DESCRIPTION:Render Unto Caesar is a radio play written by the late Patrick J. Power.\nAbout the author\nPatrick J Power\, a “Raheny veteran” was born in 1929 and he died in March of this year (2021) – just three days before his 92nd birthday. \nThe renowned storyteller was originally from Roscommon where his father was a Garda sergeant. He moved to Dublin when he was 18\, excited to be a part of a quickly changing city in the 50s. Patrick started working in Dublin Port before rising up the ranks to Planning Officer. \nAll the while the young Roscommon man was studying for a BCom in Trinity College Dublin at night time. Patrick started writing for newspapers and magazines like the Evening Press\, the Irish Independent and Ireland’s Own. Patrick spent his later years writing full time and reflecting on all the great characters he had come across in life. His plays were broadcast on RTE Radio 1 and BBC Four. \nRender Unto Caesar was turned down by RTE on the grounds that the priest’s sermons were too long and unbalanced the script. The BBC broadcast the play as part of its contribution to Bloomsday 1998. The Radio Times chose it as a highlight on Radio 4\, the London Independent’s Fiona Sturges included it in her Pick of the Day column and the Irish Times radio critic Harry Browne gave it special mention. A repeat was broadcast in June 1999. \nSynopsis\nA death in the community and a sum of money going missing.\nRender Unto Caesar gives an insight into the somewhat hidden conflicts between the Catholic Church\, the rule of law\, and the individuals in a small community. \n  \nThis production is brought to you courtesy of Patrick’s daughter Nessa. \n \nCast \n\n\n\nBridget Kinsella\n\nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\n\n\nMike Kinsella\n\nVal O’Donnell\n\n\nMary Pettit\n\nMary Dowling\n\n\nJim Pettit\n\nSteve Curran\n\n\nFather Murphy\n\nPaul McCorry (performed on the night by understudy Tim Casey)\n\n\nNellie\n\nNessa Power\n\n\nSargent\n\nPádraig Denihan\n\n\n\nDirected by \nTim Casey \n  \nProduction \nLiam Borgström \n* \nBooking required \nWith reduced capacity due to COIVD-19 we are asking you to book a seat.  If you are attending please send an email detailing the number in your party to \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie   \nAlso for those members who feel they would prefer not to attend in person there will be a limited number of places available to watch the performance over Zoom. Again please email \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie  \nThe entrance to the live performance is free\, however we will be accepting CASH donations on the night. \n*\nPatrick J. SUMMARY:Today's a Holiday
DESCRIPTION:A group of residents seize control of the roof of their apartment block in 1950s Madrid.\nIt’s a national holiday and they are at leisure to enjoy the freedom of the open air\, normally denied them by their caretaker.\nOver the course of the day\, and in the freedom of the open air\, they reveal their hopes and dreams of breaking free from the poverty which defines their lives…. \n \nThis intensely human drama by the foremost playwright of late 20th century Spain echoes the work of O’Casey and Miller\, and explores themes of hope and individual responsibility. \nOur performance combines vintage footage\, music\, commentary and live extracts over Zoom\, and will be your chance to experience the first English language performance of the play by Antonio Buero Vallejo\, as translated and adapted for the Dublin Shakespeare Society by Paul Maher. \nCast: \nMary Conlon\, \nEileen Sheridan\, \nNöelle Timmons\, \nFionn Murray O’Halpin\, \nBrigid Sweeney\, \nJane Baird\, \nMarie Ryan\, \nHilary Boyle\, \nTim Casey\, \nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\, \nLouis O’Byrne\, \nVal O’Donnell\, \nJohnny Byrne.\nNarrator and Director: Paul Maher\nAudio-visual production: Liam Borgström \nNOTE: THIS IS AN ONLINE EVENT \nNO BOOKING REQUIRED \n\nTO VIEW THE EVENT CLICK ON THIS LINK: \nhttps://youtu.be/05dUnFd4Tvw

SUMMARY:As You Like It - Episode 2
DESCRIPTION:A very rough edited version of ‘As you like it’ on Zoom \n\nDate for your diary \nEpisode 2 \nThur 3rd Dec – Audience (Door) Zoom open 7.30 (Zoom Door close 8.00 \nBoth Performances start at 8.00 ( Approx 1 hour duration each). \nBooking required at info@ dublinshakespearesociety.ie \nDue to the constraints of the “Zoom” meeting platform there is a limited number of people who can view the show. The first 35 bookings secure an entry. Remember\, and in line with COVID-19 restrictions\, it may be possible for a household to watch the performance together. So if you are a household of 1+ you only need to make one booking. \n************ \nThis play with its cross dressed theme\, gender games and sexual ambivalence\, and the Forest\, speaks to us clearly today. Shakespeare has seen into the future again with this very popular comedy with depth and vision\, which is apt to be adapted and performed on Zoom and was originally written in 1598. \nThe journey of this project began with a rough edited version of ‘ As you like it’ by George Carroll\, in the August Workshops\, which explored the potential for actors and zoom for a performance. A great and essential learning experience for all. The cast evolved and all who participated in the workshops and where available for the production\, continued with the project for performance. All the workshops and all the rehearsal were over zoom. \nThe Edited text of ‘As you like it’ \nGeorge:          “Brendan ( Co- Director)\, would you like to come in here.” \nBrendan:       “Yes\, in this edited version of the play for zoom\, we begin with Rosalind and Celia. Duke Senior has been( who is Rosalind’s father) deposed from the head of Court by his brother Duke Fredrick\, who is Celia’s father. But Celia and Rosalind are very close friends and even closer from these events.” \nGeorge:          “The background for some of the other characters is\, Orlando is the youngest son of recently deceased Sir Roland de Boys and his older brother Oliver. Who is bitter and angry with Orlando and he has been treated him harshly.” \nThe Cast \nNiamh O’Brien Rhiannon – Rosalind /Ganymede \nFiona Walsh – Celia/Aliena \nBenjamin Musgrave – Orlando\, \nNiall O’Kennedy – Touchstone\, First Lord \nSonia Lavelle- Le Beau\, Phoebe\, Audrey \nBarry O’Connor – Duke Frederick\, Oliver\, Hymen \nBilly Mulligan – Corrin\, Duke Senior \nPadraig Denihan – Silvius\, Jacques and \nBrendan O Daly as the Director
