SUMMARY:Render Unto Caesar
DESCRIPTION:Render Unto Caesar is a radio play written by the late Patrick J. Power.\nAbout the author\nPatrick J Power\, a “Raheny veteran” was born in 1929 and he died in March of this year (2021) – just three days before his 92nd birthday. \nThe renowned storyteller was originally from Roscommon where his father was a Garda sergeant. He moved to Dublin when he was 18\, excited to be a part of a quickly changing city in the 50s. Patrick started working in Dublin Port before rising up the ranks to Planning Officer. \nAll the while the young Roscommon man was studying for a BCom in Trinity College Dublin at night time. Patrick started writing for newspapers and magazines like the Evening Press\, the Irish Independent and Ireland’s Own. Patrick spent his later years writing full time and reflecting on all the great characters he had come across in life. His plays were broadcast on RTE Radio 1 and BBC Four. \nRender Unto Caesar was turned down by RTE on the grounds that the priest’s sermons were too long and unbalanced the script. The BBC broadcast the play as part of its contribution to Bloomsday 1998. The Radio Times chose it as a highlight on Radio 4\, the London Independent’s Fiona Sturges included it in her Pick of the Day column and the Irish Times radio critic Harry Browne gave it special mention. A repeat was broadcast in June 1999. \nSynopsis\nA death in the community and a sum of money going missing.\nRender Unto Caesar gives an insight into the somewhat hidden conflicts between the Catholic Church\, the rule of law\, and the individuals in a small community. \n  \nThis production is brought to you courtesy of Patrick’s daughter Nessa. \n \nCast \n\n\n\nBridget Kinsella\n\nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\n\n\nMike Kinsella\n\nVal O’Donnell\n\n\nMary Pettit\n\nMary Dowling\n\n\nJim Pettit\n\nSteve Curran\n\n\nFather Murphy\n\nPaul McCorry (performed on the night by understudy Tim Casey)\n\n\nNellie\n\nNessa Power\n\n\nSargent\n\nPádraig Denihan\n\n\n\nDirected by \nTim Casey \n  \nProduction \nLiam Borgström \n* \nBooking required \nWith reduced capacity due to COIVD-19 we are asking you to book a seat.  If you are attending please send an email detailing the number in your party to \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie   \nAlso for those members who feel they would prefer not to attend in person there will be a limited number of places available to watch the performance over Zoom. Again please email \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie  \nThe entrance to the live performance is free\, however we will be accepting CASH donations on the night. \n*\nPatrick J. SUMMARY:Nannie's Night Out
DESCRIPTION:NANNIE’S NIGHT OUT\nA comedy in one act. \nby Sean O’Casey \n \nIt is just 2 years after the establishment of the Free State. Nannie\, out of jail\, intends to have a good night on the streets of her impoverished\, north inner city Dublin. Meanwhile various people are surreptitiously seeking a free place to live. Others are hoping to cadge some money or even chance a bit of thieving/shop lifting. But\, as always with O’Casey\, there is more to it all than meets the eye. \nThis play was presented at the Abbey in 1924. It bears much relationship to The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock\, both of which went before it. In addition it has elements of The Plough and the Stars\, which was presented in 1926. It has been described by Prof Robert Hogan as an “unrecognised masterpiece”. Amongst the last of his writings\, as O’Casey was coming into conflict with the Abbey\, it also has some marks of his later Expressionist works. \nCast\nPolly:                                            Geraldine Maguire\nNannie:                                                   Nessa Power\nYoung girl:                                   Bernie Reynolds\nThe Ballad singer:                         Eoin Ó Séaghdha\nFemale Ballad singer (offstage)            Mary Ryan\nJohnny:                                                Dáithí O Broin\nJimmy:                                                 George Carroll\nJoe:                                                            Jim O’Keefe\n2 Ambulance Men:                           Willie Morrison\,\nRobert                                              Bernie Reynolds\nYoung Man                                 Maxim Trigub\nCrowd \nWith permission from: Macnaughton Lord Representation \nPart Two:\nNANNIE & O’CASEY’S EARLY WRITINGS \nREADERS:\nMary Dowling                          Geraldine Fitzgerald\nMaire Moriarty                          Roisin Mee\nBernadette Ryan Harvey \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:Rehearsed Reading ~ Strongbow
DESCRIPTION:This is a rehearsed reading of an original film script written by Brian Murray andset during the Norman invasion of Ireland. \nAuditions between 6pm and 9pm in Teachers Club on Wednesday 16th October. \nPerformance on Saturday 23rd November. \nThere’ll be maximum 4 rehearsals. \nIf you’re interested but can’t make the audition\, just email Brian amd he’ll work something out. \n brian_murray35(at)hotmail.com \n \nDe Clare\, Richard\, Earl of Pembroke and Strigul\, surnamed Strongbow\, was born about 1130. He succeeded his father in his title and estates in 1149.\nThe extensive ruins of his castle at Chepstowe would alone attest his possessions and influence; but having wasted his substance by extravagance\, and being out of favour with\, he eagerly seized the first opportunity that offered of retrieving his broken fortunes.\nThis came in King Henry’s licence to Dermot MacMurrough\, permitting him to seek assistance in England to establish his claim to the throne of Leinster.\nMacMurrough offered Strongbow extensive territories in Ireland\, and the hand of his daughter Eva\, if he would enter into his plans.\nThe intrepid Earl threw himself heart and soul into the enterprise\, and in May 1169 sent forward an expedition…… \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:The Weaver's Grave
DESCRIPTION:The first of the rehearsed readings for the 2018-2019 season is \nThe Weaver’s Grave\nby \nSeumas O’Kelly \nadapted by \nMicheal O hAodha \ndirected by \nBreege Fahy \nThe cast \nMEEHAUL LYNSKY\, an old Nailer\, played by Philip Gleeson.\nCAHIR BOWES\, an old stonebreaker\, played by Dáithí O Broin.\nTHE WIDOW\, played by Mary Conlon.\n1st GRAVEDIGGER\, played by Martin O’Connor.\n2nd GRAVEDIGGER\, played by Andrew Dancey.\nMALACHI ROOHAN\, a very old Cooper\, played by Michael Sharp.\nNAN ROOHAN\, his daughter\, played by Emma Hurley. \n \nMortimer Hehir\, the weaver\, had died and they had come in search\, of his grave to Cloon na Morav\, the Meadow of the Dead.\nMeehaul Lynskey \, the nail-maker\, was first across the stile. There was excitement in his face. His long warped body moved in a shuffle over the ground.\nFollowing him came Cahir Bowes\, the stone-breaker\, who was so beaten down from the hips forward\, that his back was horizontal as the back of an animal. His right hand held a stick which propped him up in front\, his left hand clutched his coat behind\, just above the small of the back. By these devices kept himself from toppling head over heels as he walked. Mother earth was the brow of Cahir Bowes by magnetic force\, and Cahir Bowes was resisting her fatal kiss to the last. And just now there was animation in the face he raised from its customary contemplation of the ground.\nBoth old men had the air of those who had been unexpectedly let loose. For a long time they had lurked somewhere in the shadows of life\, the world having no business for them\, and now\, suddenly\, they had been remembered and called forth to perform an office which nobody else on earth could perform. The excitement in their faces as they crossed over the stile into Cloon na Morav expressed a vehemence in their belated usefulness.\nHot on their heels came two dark\, handsome\, stoutly built men\, alike even to the cord that tied their corduroy trousers under their knees\, and\, being grave-diggers\, they carried flashing spades.\nLast of all\, and after a little delay\, a firm white hand was\, laid on the stile\, a dark figure followed\, the figure of a woman\, whose palely sad face was picturesquely\, almost dramatically\, framed in a black shawl which hung from the crown of the head. She was the widow of Mortimer Hehir\, the weaver\, and she followed the others into \nCloon na Morav\, the Meadow of the Dead. \n  \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

It is a classic comedy that never goes out of fashion. \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:Castle Rackrent
DESCRIPTION:Jan 2018 marks the 250th anniversary of Maria Edgeworth’s birth. Born on Jan 1st\, 1768 in Oxfordshire\, Maria was the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth – a prominent Anglo-Irish landlord\, writer\, engineer\, educationalist and member of Grattan’s Parliament from 1798 to its dissolution in 1801. \nAfter attending boarding school in England\, Maria moved permanently to her father’s estate at Edgeworthstown Co. Longford\, where she assisted her father with estate affairs and pursued a writing career. \nHer published works include children’s stories\, studies on education (often written in conjunction with her father)\, and novels. Published in 1800\, Castle Rackrent is a witty satire on the effects of the feudal system in Ireland and considered to be the first historical novel. \nPronounced by W.B. Yeats to be “one of the most inspired chronicles written in English”\, Castle Rackent offers a wry glimpse into the demise of the corrupt Rackrent dynasty\, told by the ‘loyal’ family servant Thady Quirk. \n \nA Rehearsed Reading of \nCastle Rackrent\nby \nMaria Edgeworth \nIn a version adapted and directed by Róisín Mee \nThe rehearsed reading features a cast you won’t want to miss! \nPhilip Gleeson\, \nIan Blackmore\, \nTim Casey\, \nSonia Lavelle\, \nNessa Power\, \nMartin O’Connor\, \nNoelle Timmons\, \nEoin Ó’Seaghdha \nand Colin Carpenter. \nGerardine Meaney\, Professor of Cultural Theory\, UCD\, will  join a panel discussion afterwards. \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:The Garden Party
DESCRIPTION:The Sheridan family is preparing to host a garden party. \nLaura is supposed to be in charge but has trouble with the workers who appear to know better\, and her mother (Mrs. Sheridan) has ordered lilies to be delivered for the party without Laura’s approval. Her sister Jose tests the piano\, and then sings a song in case she is asked to do so again later. \nAfter the furniture is rearranged\, they learn that their working-class neighbor Mr. Scott has died. \nWhile Laura believes the party should be called off\, neither Jose nor their mother agrees. The party is a success\, and later Mrs. Sheridan decides it would be good to bring a basket full of leftovers to the Scotts’ house. She summons Laura to do so. \nLaura is shown into the poor neighbors’ house by Mrs. Scott’s sister\, then sees the widow and her late husband’s corpse. She is enamored of the young man\, finding him beautiful and compelling\, and when she leaves to find her brother waiting. By visiting this dead man\, she will find her true self and become more than just a social class. \n Rehearsed Reading of “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield \nAdapted andDirected by Emily Maher.

SUMMARY:Green Tea & Full House
DESCRIPTION:Our season of rehearsed readings continues with a double bill. \n\n\nGreen Tea by Joseph Sheridan le Fanu   Directed by Sonia Lavelle \nThe anonymous narrator\, who was trained as a surgeon\, has been arranging the papers of his deceased mentor\, Dr. Martin Hesselius. One case in particular\, from about sixty-four years before\, draws his attention; forthwith the narrator presents a set of letters\, with a memorandum\, that discuss the doctor’s efforts to treat a particularly insidious and vexing complaint. \n\n \n\n\n\n  \n\n\nFull House by Meave Binchy  Directed by Noelle Timmons \nDee loves her children very much\, but now they are all grown up\, shouldn’t they leave home? \nRosie moved out when she got married\, but it didn’t work out\, so now she is back with her parents. Helen is a teacher\, and doesn’t earn enough for a place of her own. Anthony writes songs\, and is just waiting for the day when someone will pay him for them. Until then\, all three are happy at home. It doesn’t cost them anything\, and surely their parents like having a full house? \n\n\n  \n
