SUMMARY:Lord Arthur Savile's Crime
DESCRIPTION:Oscar Wilde’s Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime follows the seemingly fortunate Lord Arthur\, a young aristocrat on the brink of a perfect marriage\, whose life is abruptly unsettled by a chilling prediction. At a high-society gathering\, a palm reader reveals that Arthur is destined to commit a terrible crime. What begins as an amusing curiosity quickly takes hold of his mind\, transforming his engagement and future into something shadowed by inevitability and dread. \nIn this adaptation—written and directed by George Carroll for The Dublin Shakespeare Society—the story is brought to life in a promenade theatre style at The Teachers’ Club. The audience moves through the space alongside the characters\, heightening the tension as Arthur wrestles with his conscience and his peculiar sense of duty. Determined to rid himself of this looming fate before marriage\, he convinces himself that committing the foretold act on his own terms is the only honorable path forward. \nAs Arthur’s plans grow increasingly elaborate\, questions begin to surface: will he succeed in outwitting fate\, or is he merely stepping deeper into its design? Can morality survive when shaped by prophecy\, or does belief in destiny become its own kind of trap? Is Arthur truly in control of his actions—or has the prediction already sealed his course? And perhaps most unsettling of all: what form will this “crime” ultimately take? \n CLICK HERE FOR POSTER AS IMAGE \nOpening 26th May 2026 at 9pm \nNightly at 7pm and 9pm until Saturday 30th May 2026 \n7pm Show on Tuesday 26th not available for booking \nSpecial matinee Saturday 30th May at 3:30pm \nBOOK NOW \n\n\n\n\nBook by PHONE

Dunleavy). \nThe Production\nOur Autumn production\, ‘The Last Night @ the Catacombs’ is inspired by the 1940’s popular after-hours meeting place ‘The Catacombs’\, for the new Dublin Bohemians. The story starts and ends with Dickie Wiley. He recalls the fervour of those years\, the place as a safe haven and its ultimate demise. The audience will be led into the Catacombs\, taking place throughout the entire basement of Teachers @ 36 Parnell Square.\nAbout the Catacombs\nThe Catacombs was located in the underground basement of a Georgian House @ No. 13 Fitzwilliam Place. The nocturnal happenings of the Catacombs took place in the 1940’s when Dublin was an ultra-conservative\, impoverished city\, though it had a thriving artistic life. The impresario of this menage\, was an Englishman\, Richard Wyman (Dickie)\, a dandy\, eccentric and fond of the bizarre.\nFollowing the death of his officer boyfriend during World War 2\, who he referred to as ‘the Faithful Heart’\, broken-hearted he moved to Dublin. It was frequented by the new Bohemians of the day\, young\, poor\, mostly students. Aspiring\, up and coming writers and poets included Brendan Behan\, J.P. Dunleavy\, Anthony Cronin\, John Jordan\, & Pearse Hutchinson; actors such as Dan O’Herlihy\, Godfrey Quigley and Carolyn Swift; sculptor Irene Broe; others included Gainor Steven Crist\, John Ryan\, Joan Furlong\, & Des Mac Namara; the physicist Erwin Schrodinger along with some aristocracy\, republicans\, and revolutionaries. And Patrick Kavanagh. They would come from McDaids and party till the early hours. Songs\, fights\, romance\, where ‘men had women\, men had men and women had women’ (Brendan Behan).

SUMMARY:The Comedy of Errors
DESCRIPTION:Matinee Saturday 20th @3pm\n“The Comedy of Errors” is a comedic play written by William Shakespeare in the early 1590s. It is one of Shakespeare’s earliest works and is often regarded as his most farcical comedy. The play is set in the bustling port city of Ephesus\, which is known for its trade and commerce. The story revolves around two sets of identical twins who were separated at birth and end up in Ephesus\, leading to a series of hilarious and confusing misunderstandings. \nThe main characters in the play are the two sets of identical twins: Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant Dromio of Syracuse\, and Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant Dromio of Ephesus. The two sets of twins were separated at birth during a shipwreck and each was raised in a different city. Years later\, Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant arrive in Ephesus in search of their long-lost twin brothers\, and their arrival sets off a chain of mistaken identity and comic misunderstandings. \nThe play’s plot revolves around the confusion that arises from the mistaken identities of the two sets of twins. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant are mistaken for their identical twins by the citizens of Ephesus\, leading to a series of absurd situations. They are pursued by creditors and wives\, and even end up in jail. Meanwhile\, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant are baffled by the strange behavior of everyone that they meet\, who seem to be acting as if they know them. \nThroughout the play\, Shakespeare uses clever wordplay\, puns\, and physical comedy to create a light-hearted and amusing atmosphere. The play is full of mistaken identities\, slapstick humor\, and improbable coincidences. Despite the farcical nature of the play\, it also explores deeper themes such as identity\, family\, and forgiveness. Overall\, “The Comedy of Errors” is a timeless classic that continues to be popular with audiences today.\n \n \nDirected by\nNoelle Timmons \nProduction\nAnne McManus \nStage Manager\nAisling O’Byrne \nCast\nNeil Sharpson\, Deaglán Page\, Shane Cadden\, Marcus MacGabhann\, Ellen Howley\, Geraldine Maguire\, Julie Mannion\, Bernie Reynolds\, Aidan Judd\, Brigid Sweeney\, Edward Clinton\, Nathan Keogh\, Hilary Boyle\, Francesca Bianchi\, Irene Cubas\, Dáithí O Broin\, Peter Prior\, Martin O’Connor \nTickets €18 Concession rate €16  \nBookings 085 223 0251 \nBook Now Online

SUMMARY:Theatre of the Oppressed
DESCRIPTION:This Forum Theatre event comprised two short pieces devised over six weekly workshops with Shakes members.\nForum Theater\, one of the major techniques within Theatre of the Oppressed\, allows spectators to collaborate in the experience by becoming ‘spect-actors’ (the audiences who participate in the actual performance). \nThrough a moderator (Joker) and a group of actively engaged spectators\, Forum Theatre embodies dialogues\, exchanges\, learning\, teaching\, and pleasure. At the conclusion\, the play will begin again with the audience being able to replace or add to the characters on stage to present their interventions; alternate solutions to the problems faced. \nParticipation is option\, so if you come you don’t have to get up on stage – but you might want to! \n \nCast and Production \nBrian Murray\nEdward Clinton\nDermot Corrigan\nNoelle Timmons\nDaithi O Broin\nAidan Judd\nCristhian R. Zelaya\nNessa Power \n  \nNo prior booking.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nTea and Coffee with light refreshments served.

SUMMARY:Render Unto Caesar
DESCRIPTION:Render Unto Caesar is a radio play written by the late Patrick J. Power.\nAbout the author\nPatrick J Power\, a “Raheny veteran” was born in 1929 and he died in March of this year (2021) – just three days before his 92nd birthday. \nThe renowned storyteller was originally from Roscommon where his father was a Garda sergeant. He moved to Dublin when he was 18\, excited to be a part of a quickly changing city in the 50s. Patrick started working in Dublin Port before rising up the ranks to Planning Officer. \nAll the while the young Roscommon man was studying for a BCom in Trinity College Dublin at night time. Patrick started writing for newspapers and magazines like the Evening Press\, the Irish Independent and Ireland’s Own. Patrick spent his later years writing full time and reflecting on all the great characters he had come across in life. His plays were broadcast on RTE Radio 1 and BBC Four. \nRender Unto Caesar was turned down by RTE on the grounds that the priest’s sermons were too long and unbalanced the script. The BBC broadcast the play as part of its contribution to Bloomsday 1998. The Radio Times chose it as a highlight on Radio 4\, the London Independent’s Fiona Sturges included it in her Pick of the Day column and the Irish Times radio critic Harry Browne gave it special mention. A repeat was broadcast in June 1999. \nSynopsis\nA death in the community and a sum of money going missing.\nRender Unto Caesar gives an insight into the somewhat hidden conflicts between the Catholic Church\, the rule of law\, and the individuals in a small community. \n  \nThis production is brought to you courtesy of Patrick’s daughter Nessa. \n \nCast \n\n\n\nBridget Kinsella\n\nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\n\n\nMike Kinsella\n\nVal O’Donnell\n\n\nMary Pettit\n\nMary Dowling\n\n\nJim Pettit\n\nSteve Curran\n\n\nFather Murphy\n\nPaul McCorry (performed on the night by understudy Tim Casey)\n\n\nNellie\n\nNessa Power\n\n\nSargent\n\nPádraig Denihan\n\n\n\nDirected by \nTim Casey \n  \nProduction \nLiam Borgström \n* \nBooking required \nWith reduced capacity due to COIVD-19 we are asking you to book a seat.  If you are attending please send an email detailing the number in your party to \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie   \nAlso for those members who feel they would prefer not to attend in person there will be a limited number of places available to watch the performance over Zoom. Again please email \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie  \nThe entrance to the live performance is free\, however we will be accepting CASH donations on the night. \n*\nPatrick J. DESCRIPTION:A group of residents seize control of the roof of their apartment block in 1950s Madrid.\nIt’s a national holiday and they are at leisure to enjoy the freedom of the open air\, normally denied them by their caretaker.\nOver the course of the day\, and in the freedom of the open air\, they reveal their hopes and dreams of breaking free from the poverty which defines their lives…. \n \nThis intensely human drama by the foremost playwright of late 20th century Spain echoes the work of O’Casey and Miller\, and explores themes of hope and individual responsibility. \nOur performance combines vintage footage\, music\, commentary and live extracts over Zoom\, and will be your chance to experience the first English language performance of the play by Antonio Buero Vallejo\, as translated and adapted for the Dublin Shakespeare Society by Paul Maher. \nCast: \nMary Conlon\, \nEileen Sheridan\, \nNöelle Timmons\, \nFionn Murray O’Halpin\, \nBrigid Sweeney\, \nJane Baird\, \nMarie Ryan\, \nHilary Boyle\, \nTim Casey\, \nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\, \nLouis O’Byrne\, \nVal O’Donnell\, \nJohnny Byrne.\nNarrator and Director: Paul Maher\nAudio-visual production: Liam Borgström \nNOTE: THIS IS AN ONLINE EVENT \nNO BOOKING REQUIRED \n\nTO VIEW THE EVENT CLICK ON THIS LINK: \nhttps://youtu.be/05dUnFd4Tvw

SUMMARY:Glenmalure Hill Walk and Performance
DESCRIPTION:The Dublin Shakespeare Society is holding a fundraising hill-walk followed by a rehearsed reading of JM Synge’s ‘In the Shadow of the Glen’ in Glenmalure on Sunday 18th of August (weather permitting). \n \nThe walk\, to be led by Louis O’Byrne\, will start at 12.00 noon and last approximately one hour.  It will include part of the historical Miner’s Path and involve some uphill walking along forest paths suitable for most walkers.  The starting point will be the Barravore car park close to Glenmalure Youth Hostel\, and will terminate at the hostel itself. \nThe reading which should last approximately 45 minutes\, will be performed in the garden of the  hostel after the walk. The starting time will be 2.30pm (for those who do not wish to walk). \n‘In the Shadow of the Glen’ is a particularly suitable choice\, as a ruined cottage close to the hostel is believed to be the cottage Synge had in mind as the setting for the play.  The reading will be performed by Roisin Mee\, Philip Gleeson\, Paul McCorry and Stephen Burke and directed by Paul Maher. \nCooking facilities at the hostel are limited but tea and coffee will be available and the venue is suitable for picnics.  You would be advised to bring ground blankets or foldable chairs. Sanitary facilities are also limited. \nIt takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach Glenmalure Hostel (A67YW77) from Dublin by car and\, as there is no public transport\, we would suggest that those travelling might offer lifts to members who don’t have transport of their own. \nBooking at 0858432881\, contribution €15 per person. \n  \nHistoric Glenmalure \nAt the famous Battle of Glenmalure 1580 an Irish Catholic force made up of Gaelic clans from the Wicklow Mountains and led by Fiach McHugh O’Byrne\, defeated an English army under Lord Grey. The fighting took place near the O’Byrne mountain stronghold in Glenmalure. \nWhile trying to climb the steep slopes of the valley (visible from the path)\, the inexperienced English soldiers were ambushed by the Irish rebels\, who had hidden themselves in the woods. The English army of 3\,000 suffered 800 casualties. Rumours that Louis O’Byrne was leading a walk in the valley at the time can be discounted\, as he was clearly too young. \nMining in Glenmalure may have begun as early as 1797.  It continued through the period of the 1798 rebellion which persisted in the valley until 1803. Various records document intermittent production between 1811 and 1900.  On the walk you will see spoil heaps from the mines\, a tunnel or adit\, the remains of a crusher house and water mill. \nJohn Millington Synge \nSynge was widely regarded as the most influential Irish dramatist of the twentieth century. He was an Irish playwright\, poet\, prose writer\, and collector of folklore. One of the co -founders of the Abbey Theatre\, he is best known for the play “The Playboy of the Western World” which caused riots during its opening run at the Abbey theatre. Synge wrote many well known plays\, including “Riders to the Sea”\, which is often considered to be his strongest literary work. Although he came from an Anglo-Irish background\, his writings are mainly concerned with the world of the Roman Catholic peasants of rural Ireland. “In The Shadow of the Glen” premiered on October 8\, 1903 as a production of the Irish National Theatre Society. Although it was the third play completed by Synge\, it was the first to be produced\, and it created an immediate controversy for the author and the National Theatre. Although the play’s focus on a loveless and decaying marriage hardly represented a new subject for drama\, many Irish nationalists saw Synge’s play as nothing less than an affront to Irish femininity. The resulting confrontations established the author’s volatile relationship with the nationalist community in Ireland and set the stage for the more massive and far-reaching conflict.

SUMMARY:The Capulets and Montagues
DESCRIPTION:Book now on tickets.ie\nPaul Maher will be directing his own translation of ‘The Capulet’s and Montague’s or Romeo and Juliet: The Comedy’.\nThe play will be staged in the Hall of Teachers’ Club\, Parnell Square from 18 to 21 April this year in a cabaret style production with live music and dance. \nThis production is particularly exciting because \n•   Lope de Vega (1564-1635) is Spain’s foremost playwright and a contemporary of Shakespeare.  Though virtually unknown in the English speaking world he is hugely respected among Spanish speakers and is credited with writing over 1\,500 plays in his lifetime\, many of them classics of world theatre.  Some people may remember the evening in 2015 when Paul introduced Lope’s work to the society \n•   The play was written around 1603 by Spain’s foremost playwright Lope de Vega\, a contemporary of Shakespeare. While both playwrights\, writing at the same time used the same sources for their plays\, there is no evidence that either was aware of the other’s work. \n•   There are many similarities in the plots and\, of course\, significant differences\, not least of which is the fact Lope created a comedy from the material while Shakespeare created a tragedy. \n•   There is a broad correlation between scenes in both plays: a party scene in which the lovers fall in love at first sight\, a fight scene and killing after which the male protagonist is sent into exile\, a farewell scene in the garden between the lovers\, a sleeping draught that induces a death-like state in the female protagonist\, and a scene in a crypt. \n•   This is an English version produced especially for the Shakes. \n•   This may be the first production in Ireland of a play by Lope de Vega.  It is certainly the first in living memory \n•   By attending the show get the opportunity to evaluate how two masters of world theatre shaped brilliant but very different plays from the same source material. \nCheck out the interview with the Director – Paul Maher – HERE

SUMMARY:By the Bog of Cats
DESCRIPTION:Under licence from The Agency London\, Dublin Shakespeare Society proudly present this amateur production of \nBy the Bog of Cats\nMarina Carr \nDirected by Geraldine Maguire \n\nBook Now\nDownload A4 Poster \nCast\n\nMary Conlon\nBrian Murray\nCiara Cochrane\n\n\nMartin O Connor\nNiamh Delany\nPeter Prior\n\n\n Timothy Telford\nLouis O Byrne\nWillie Morrisson\n\n\nEimear SimmsKit GerathyBreege Fahy\n\n\nJulianna Gonzales\n  Noelle Timmons \n\nThe scorn of Hester Swayne\, a woman abandoned once and discarded later\, threatens a whole community as she awaits her mother’s return to the Bog of Cats: ‘God’s punishing me but I won’t take his blows lyin’ down’. Forgiveness\, vengeance and disparate forces figure in the tangled history embodied in her own powerful drama as it makes its way through heartbreak and\, occasionally\, hilarity\, and its secrets unfold towards its tragic conclusion. \nWednesday 14th June\,Special Guest : Dr Emilie Pine\, UCD \nEmilie Pine lectures in Modern Drama and Irish Studies. She joined the School of English\, Drama and Film in the spring of 2008. Prior to this she lectured for two years at the University of York\, following the completion of her PhD in Irish Theatre and Film at Trinity College\, Dublin. \nEmilie is Director of the Irish Memory Studies Research Network and Assistant Editor of the Irish University Review. She is currently a judge for the Irish Times Theatre Awards. \nEmilie will comment on the production which will then lead in to a discussion with contribution from the audience. \nDirector’s Synopsis\nMarina Carr’s plays are all inspired by the plays and legends of Ancient Greece. Carr states that By the bog of Cats was inspired by Medea by Euripides which was produced in the ampitheatre at Epidaurus in 431 B.C.  The play remained part of the repertoire of Ancient Greek Theatre and experienced renewed interest with the emergence of the feminist movement because of its nuanced and sympathetic portrayal of Medea’s struggle to take charge of her own life in a male-dominated world. \nHester Swane represents both Medea and the Traveller Community as she is the outsider shunned by the settled community because of her strange and foreign ways. She represents   The Other’\, the untouchable\, the people that society reject and therefore is ostricised by the community. With so many immigrants today in Ireland we are faced with the challenge of embracing different cultures. \nIreland today and the rest of the world has embrace capitalism\, industrialisation and materialism. Carr poses the question what space is there left in our lives for the wild\, the untamed\, for dreams\, ghosts\, poetry and song? She presents characters full of wit\, comedy\, tragedy and pathos. She explores the warped relationships in familiies and communities. The play is a microcosm of society’s struggles and the whole gambit of the human condition. \nNature itself is shown as monumental\, represented by the Bog\, which holds the secrets\, of the past and is ever changing\, mysterious and treacherous. Modern society is confronted by the ghosts of the past and the memories\, dreams and poetry of the human soul and spirit. We recognise Carr’s characters in ourselves. They are full of warmth\, dynamism\, courage with hearts struggling to survive the human condition. Carr shows us the unpredictabilty the transitory\, and vulnerable nature of existence. \nGeraldine Maguire
