What is happening in that gloomy, dank Motel?

You can check out – but you can’t leave

Dublin Shakespeare is holding workshop auditions for casting in our collaborative project between Dublin Shakespeare and Belfast BARTS Drama Group. This ambitious joint venture will be a site specific, immersive style production based in a fictional 'Motel' and containing the interwoven stories of various Shakespeare characters who arrive at the motel and proceed to embark on their own individual dark, illicit and seductive deeds.

The project initiative is being organised and promoted by the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) Open Stages 2011/2012. The RSC will brand a Shakespeare themed competition for participating groups (from all over the U.K.) with the overall national winners invited to perform on the stage of the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford as part of the World Shakespeare Festival July 2012.

Rehearsals will start early October (commitment time depends on role) with performance scheduled for 23/24/25th February in Belfast 2012.

Workshop Date/times: Saturday 24th September 11.30am to 1.30pm,

Where: Teachers Club

COLLABORATIVE PROJECT WITH BARTS PLAYERS, BELFAST

This winter we will be working on a collaborative project between Dublin Shakespeare and the Belfast BARTS Drama Group.  This ambitious joint venture will be a site specific, immersive style production based in a fictional 'Motel' and containing the interwoven stories of various Shakespeare characters who arrive at the motel and proceed to embark on their own individual dark, illicit and seductive deeds.

There will be performances in both Belfast and Dublin, including a performance in the Lyric Theatre, Belfast

This is part of an initiative is being organised and promoted by the RSC (Royal Shakespeare Company) Open Stages 2011/2012.  The overall winners will be invited to perform on the stage of the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford as part of the World Shakespeare Festival July 2012.

 THE HENRYS (Shakespeare’s history plays)

We have deferred the plans to do a production this year based on Shakespeare’s history plays this autumn.   The intention was to perform this in a particular venue, and unfortunately it has emerged that the venue we had in mind is not suitable, as for health and safety rules it cannot hold the required cast and audience.     Other venues are being looked at, and we hope to present this next autumn.

REHEARSED READINGS

We plan to once again present a series of rehearsed readings in the New Year.   The co-ordinator is Paul Maher and the proposed theme is :  “Classic Irish comedies”. Rehearsed readings are an opportunity for new directors to get directing experience without taking on a full scale production, and we would strongly encourage any potential directors who might be interested to contact Paul Maher on 0876318757.

ONE ACT-PLAYS

We hope to present two one-act plays in the first half of next year.  Dates are not yet fixed, but will be organised in the light of the timing of the “BARTS” project.   Ideally we would have a third play on the programme, and would welcome proposals from anyone who might be interested in directing a one act play.   Like the rehearsed readings, its an opportunity for new directors to try out their skills. If you are interested, contact any of the Committee.

WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS

Welcome to new members: Maureen Fox, Mark Doyle, Brian Murray, Fiona Colhoun.

OLD SHAKES PAPERS/RECORDS

We are trying to assemble the records of the Shakes for possible archiving. This was done before with older papers. If anyone has any old papers, files, copies of flyers or any items that might be included in the archive, contact any committee member.

SUBS

Just a reminder that annual subs are now due.   The annual sub is €30, with a reduced rate of €20 for members who are unwaged.   Those paying by post should make out cheques to “Dublin Shakespeare” and send to Anne McManus at 21 Ashcroft, Raheny, Dublin 5

Storage Space Appeal

Louis O'Byrne is storing at his home, on a temporary basis, certain items of stage furniture which were built for recent Shakes Shows. The Shakes is appealing to members to help them to secure permanent storage facilities for these items. They could be stored in an empty house garage, lock-up area, empty or part-vacant industrial facilities - in any reasonably central location. Access would only be required a few times a year, in connection with a current production.

If you know of a suitable location in which such items could be stored please contact Val O'Donnell, Louis O'Byrne or anyone on the Committee so that we could consider suitability.

If we cannot find suitable accommodation within a few months, Louis will be obliged to dispose of the items involved, to provide more space at his home.

All the best,.............. Henry Mitchell
