It focuses\, episodically and objectively\, on the various responses of friends\, family and others to Rita Kilshaw’s predicament\, and their conditioning by the social values and strong religious beliefs of the time. \nAlthough written seventy years ago\, James Plunkett’s powerful story has much contemporary relevance\, given the serious efforts made in recent times to acknowledge the failings of some of the most powerful institutions in the State\, and wider society\, in caring for single\, unmarried mothers. \nVal O’Donnell\nMarch 2024 \nCAST\nEoin Langford\nSarah Groarke\nUna Ni Chanainn\nEmma Hurley\nDeirdre Jones\nPaul McCorry\nPadraig Denihan\nBen Musgrave\nSteve Curran\nThomas Conlon\nDirected by Mary Conlon \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment.\nThere will be a raffle!! The play was\noriginally written as part of Orson Welles serialization that\nincluded War of the Worlds.1Ne loved the way the production\nwas presented with a visual representation of how the radio\nplay would look like as performed in the studio. I was\nintrigued as to what could be achieved if you were to perform\nWar of the Worlds in the same format with over the top\nsound effects and some surreal post-apocalyptic music.\n\nHaving read both the novel and the radio play I decided to\nrewrite using Irish references. This gave scope to add some\ncolour to the intentionally colourless characters in the\noriginal works. I loosely based the reporters on Irish\ncelebrities (Gay Byrne\, Teresa Mannion and a youthful TV3\nstyle reporter). Other characters such as the farmer\, the\nBrigadier and the Irish President should also be recognisable\nto our audience.\n\nThe story is broadly the same with a few alterations to bring it\na little more up to date. Wells very clearly stated that the\ncreatures were Martians. In our adaptation there is no\ndefinitive explanation given as to where they come from.\nWells also asserted that the Martians invaded as a result of a\ndrain on resources in their own planet that resulted from the\nplanet drifting further from the sun. We speculate through\nProfessor McPherson that the aliens have come to our planet\nas a result of the creatures themselves exhausting resources\non their own planet\, adding an environmental dimension to\nthe piece.\n\nRay Murray\, Director URL:https://www.dublinshakespearesociety.ie/event/rehearsed-reading-the-war-of-the-worlds/ LOCATION:The Teachers’ Club\, 36 Parnell Square West\, Dublin\, Dublin\, D01 T6V6\, Ireland CATEGORIES:Devised Piece,Devised Piece,Rehearsed Reading ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.dublinshakespearesociety.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/04/WOW_Featured.png ORGANIZER;CN="Dublin Shakespeare Society":MAILTO:info(at)dublinshakespearesociety.ie END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=Europe/London:20230223T200000 DTEND;TZID=Europe/London:20230223T213000 DTSTAMP:20240328T234348 CREATED:20230220T115818Z LAST-MODIFIED:20230220T115818Z UID:10935-1677182400-1677187800@www.dublinshakespearesociety.ie SUMMARY:Auditions ~ War of the Worlds DESCRIPTION:Dublin Shakespeare Society will be holding auditions for a rehearsed reading of\n\n\nWar of the Worlds\n\n\n(A re-adaptation of Howard Koch’s radio play based on the H.G. Power.\nAbout the author\nPatrick J Power\, a “Raheny veteran” was born in 1929 and he died in March of this year (2021) – just three days before his 92nd birthday. \nThe renowned storyteller was originally from Roscommon where his father was a Garda sergeant. He moved to Dublin when he was 18\, excited to be a part of a quickly changing city in the 50s. Patrick started working in Dublin Port before rising up the ranks to Planning Officer. \nAll the while the young Roscommon man was studying for a BCom in Trinity College Dublin at night time. Patrick started writing for newspapers and magazines like the Evening Press\, the Irish Independent and Ireland’s Own. Patrick spent his later years writing full time and reflecting on all the great characters he had come across in life. His plays were broadcast on RTE Radio 1 and BBC Four. \nRender Unto Caesar was turned down by RTE on the grounds that the priest’s sermons were too long and unbalanced the script. The BBC broadcast the play as part of its contribution to Bloomsday 1998. The Radio Times chose it as a highlight on Radio 4\, the London Independent’s Fiona Sturges included it in her Pick of the Day column and the Irish Times radio critic Harry Browne gave it special mention. A repeat was broadcast in June 1999. \nSynopsis\nA death in the community and a sum of money going missing.\nRender Unto Caesar gives an insight into the somewhat hidden conflicts between the Catholic Church\, the rule of law\, and the individuals in a small community. \n  \nThis production is brought to you courtesy of Patrick’s daughter Nessa. \n \nCast \n\n\n\nBridget Kinsella\n\nMuriel Caslin O’Hagan\n\n\nMike Kinsella\n\nVal O’Donnell\n\n\nMary Pettit\n\nMary Dowling\n\n\nJim Pettit\n\nSteve Curran\n\n\nFather Murphy\n\nPaul McCorry (performed on the night by understudy Tim Casey)\n\n\nNellie\n\nNessa Power\n\n\nSargent\n\nPádraig Denihan\n\n\n\nDirected by \nTim Casey \n  \nProduction \nLiam Borgström \n* \nBooking required \nWith reduced capacity due to COIVD-19 we are asking you to book a seat.  If you are attending please send an email detailing the number in your party to \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie   \nAlso for those members who feel they would prefer not to attend in person there will be a limited number of places available to watch the performance over Zoom. Again please email \nbookings@dublinshakespearesociety.ie  \nThe entrance to the live performance is free\, however we will be accepting CASH donations on the night. \n*\nPatrick J. Nannie\, out of jail\, intends to have a good night on the streets of her impoverished\, north inner city Dublin. Meanwhile various people are surreptitiously seeking a free place to live. Others are hoping to cadge some money or even chance a bit of thieving/shop lifting. But\, as always with O’Casey\, there is more to it all than meets the eye. \nThis play was presented at the Abbey in 1924. It bears much relationship to The Shadow of a Gunman and Juno and the Paycock\, both of which went before it. In addition it has elements of The Plough and the Stars\, which was presented in 1926. It has been described by Prof Robert Hogan as an “unrecognised masterpiece”. Born on Jan 1st\, 1768 in Oxfordshire\, Maria was the eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth – a prominent Anglo-Irish landlord\, writer\, engineer\, educationalist and member of Grattan’s Parliament from 1798 to its dissolution in 1801. \nAfter attending boarding school in England\, Maria moved permanently to her father’s estate at Edgeworthstown Co. Longford\, where she assisted her father with estate affairs and pursued a writing career. \nHer published works include children’s stories\, studies on education (often written in conjunction with her father)\, and novels. Published in 1800\, Castle Rackrent is a witty satire on the effects of the feudal system in Ireland and considered to be the first historical novel. \nPronounced by W.B. Yeats to be “one of the most inspired chronicles written in English”\, Castle Rackent offers a wry glimpse into the demise of the corrupt Rackrent dynasty\, told by the ‘loyal’ family servant Thady Quirk. \n \nA Rehearsed Reading of \nCastle Rackrent\nby \nMaria Edgeworth \nIn a version adapted and directed by Róisín Mee \nThe rehearsed reading features a cast you won’t want to miss! \nPhilip Gleeson\, \nIan Blackmore\, \nTim Casey\, \nSonia Lavelle\, \nNessa Power\, \nMartin O’Connor\, \nNoelle Timmons\, \nEoin Ó’Seaghdha \nand Colin Carpenter. \nGerardine Meaney\, Professor of Cultural Theory\, UCD\, will  join a panel discussion afterwards. \nNo prior booking for rehearsed readings.\nPatrons are advised to arrive early to avoid disappointment. She summons Laura to do so. \nLaura is shown into the poor neighbors’ house by Mrs. Scott’s sister\, then sees the widow and her late husband’s corpse. She is enamored of the young man\, finding him beautiful and compelling\, and when she leaves to find her brother waiting. By visiting this dead man\, she will find her true self and become more than just a social class. \n Rehearsed Reading of “The Garden Party” by Katherine Mansfield \nAdapted andDirected by Emily Maher.
