Render Unto Caesar is a radio play written by the late Patrick J. Power.

About the author
Patrick J Power, a “Raheny veteran” was born in 1929 and he died in March of this year (2021) – just three days before his 92nd birthday.

The renowned storyteller was originally from Roscommon where his father was a Garda sergeant. He moved to Dublin when he was 18, excited to be a part of a quickly changing city in the 50s. Patrick started working in Dublin Port before rising up the ranks to Planning Officer.

All the while the young Roscommon man was studying for a BCom in Trinity College Dublin at night time. Patrick started writing for newspapers and magazines like the Evening Press, the Irish Independent and Ireland’s Own. Patrick spent his later years writing full time and reflecting on all the great characters he had come across in life. His plays were broadcast on RTE Radio 1 and BBC Four.

Render Unto Caesar was turned down by RTE on the grounds that the priest’s sermons were too long and unbalanced the script. The BBC broadcast the play as part of its contribution to Bloomsday 1998. The Radio Times chose it as a highlight on Radio 4, the London Independent’s Fiona Sturges included it in her Pick of the Day column and the Irish Times radio critic Harry Browne gave it special mention. A repeat was broadcast in June 1999.

Synopsis
A death in the community and a sum of money going missing.
Render Unto Caesar gives an insight into the somewhat hidden conflicts between the Catholic Church, the rule of law, and the individuals in a small community.
